After several years of professional performance in the classical world
singer Jane Cartney made
her debut with her first jazz band, THE JANE CARTNEY JAZZ QUARTET,
in 2002.
There are those who are sceptical about classical singers who move
into the jazz field, and there are many singers for whom this venture
has been far from successful. Jane Cartney is one of the few who has
the ability to adapt. She makes this simple statement, “The
voice is a wonderfully versatile and adaptable instrument with the
ability to lighten, darken, and colour, capable of changing at will,
to convey mood and the full range of human emotions. My instrument
is my voice and I have learned to use it in many different ways.
'Jane has a full rich voice with tender undertones, particularly
effective in songs such as 'Misty', 'Ain't Misbehavin' and a litle
known song from the 40's 'Detour Ahead'... - The Worthing Independent
and Sussex News
'I have listened to your recording - I think it is excellent!'
- David Jacobs BBC Broadcaster.
The jazz song repertoire is a terrific vehicle to indulge the senses
as well as the myriad colours of the voice, and to convey these feelings
to the audience. |

There is the opportunity
to shake off the ties imposed on the classical singer, and a wonderful
freedom to explore the vagaries of rhythm and improvisation. There
is also the thrill of working so closely with the talented guys
in the band and sharing the joy of performance with the audience.”
THE JANE CARTNEY JAZZ QUARTET has appeared at a range of public
venues along the south coast, as well as being a popular choice
to entertain at private functions.
‘Thank you for the wonderful entertainment at Glynis and Noel’s
ruby wedding party – it was perfect.’ - Private
Party, The Ship Inn, Chichester.
Jane has built up an extensive repertoire
of classic numbers from The Great American Songbook and since relocating
to the West Country has formed a new band, CARTNEY
JAZZ.
'We really appreciated the request you sang for our first dance
… the band made the evening reception very special' -
Wedding Reception, Falfield, Glos.
The other members of the band are chosen from the cream of versatile
jazz musicians and feature pianist John Nicoll, bassist Mike Thorn
and drummers Paul Shepherd and Malcolm Mortimore. All have the ability
to solo brilliantly and to accompany with sensitivity.
Jane and her fellow musicians have also performed with some of the
biggest names in the business – Shirley Bassey, Neil Diamond,
Laurie Holloway, Barney Kessel.
We pride ourselves not only on our high standards of technical expertise
and performance but also on our elegant and stylish presentation.
